PPM loses contact if not on short cable

My PPM works fine if connected directly to my computer, giving power readings, temp, etc, but only on the short cable supplied.
If I connect it through a USB hub the software cannot find it.
As the point (for me) was to minimise the cables going to the scope, I'd like to monitor the power and environment from a comfortable distance via powered 5m USB cable and a hub at the scope.
Is this a problem?
