Can a UPB v2/3 power a Stellarmate X (USB C input port)?

Post by rodolgo »

Hi,
Stellarmate X has an USB C-type DC input port, 12 V and 2+ A.
I struggle figuring out if and how it could be powered straight from the always-on port of the UPBv2 (or v3).
So far, I have to rely on the clumsy power adapter provided with the Stellarmate... which is quite inconvenient in the field.
Thanks in advance for advice or directions.
Regards,
Rodolphe

Hi Rodolphe

I was looking at the Stellarmate X about 6 months ago and had exactly the same concern that the power input using USB C was non standard and had the same concern about dragging a mains power adaptor across the patio which was cumbersome at best. I spoke in detail to both Jasem at Ikarus and their UK vendor about alternative power options but didn't a get a clear answer at the time about available options or even if the X USB C input was 'PD' enabled (where the power provider and the X unit as consumer 'negotiate' the power requirements when the USB C is plugged in).

But Jasem was then aware of the problem and was researching appropriate alternative power cables to power the X from other sources such as a Powertank or Powerbox and I got the impression that these alternatives would be available within a few weeks so you may want to check directly with Ikarus and/or your local Stellarmate vendor if these power cables are now available and which hopefully should enable you to power from the UPBv2

In the end I decided to purchase a separate mini PC which had a more standard power requirement and go for the Stellarmate X OS and therefore didn't go for the X, : I tested configuration first by sorting out the Windows recovery, installinga free distro of Ubuntu on the new mini pc - which worked fine - and which then reassured me that Stellarmate OS would also work on the mini PC - and it did.

Cheers

Pete
