PPBA USB 3.0 Port 1 Not Fully Functional

Post by natwin »

I'm having the same issue as others with USB port 1. The QHY247C USB 3.0 camera will not work in port 1. If a large number of USB 3.0 cameras cannot connect to the PPBA USB port 1, for whatever reason, then perhaps Pegasus Astro can rethink how that port is configured. This makes the PPBA effectively a 3 USB port hub for many users, which is short of what most people might need.

If I have to mount another USB hub or run an additional cable from the telescope, it defeats the purpose of buying an expensive all in one device. Is there a possible firmware update that can fix this issue, or is it baked into the hardware as built?

Port1 is a USB3 native port.
Unfortunatelly QHY cameras require USB2 enumeration before switching to USB3. Therefore these cameras cannot fully switch to USB3 as the USB2 signalling is not presence in this port. USB2 signalling of this specific USB port is internally used for the microcontroller communication and control of PPBADV device.
Any other USB3 device works perfectly fine there. (E.g a USB stick or hard drive can verify that this port work as a native USB3).

This port (USB Port1) is advertised from day one as a charging / power USB port (for RPI and other devices) or USB3 native port.

This is a hardware limitation as this port cannot work with these cameras. Other cameras E.g ZWO ASI 2600 which is a native USB3 port work fine with this specific port.
Please check here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=37

Firmware changes has to be applied on QHY camera side to work as a native USB3 camera.

Thank you for the quick reply and explanation. It is true that the published specifications state port 1 is a USB 3.0 only port. It is, of course, less clear that some USB 3.0 cameras will not work with a USB 3.0 only port. I do understand that you've created the USB 3.0 only port to support certain devices that can be powered by a USB 3.0 3A connection. But, since "USB2 enumeration" isn't quite in the common lexicon, it would be helpful to state the potential limitations in your literature.
