UPBv2 shorted out

Post by dominatordan »

I plugged my UPBv2 into the battery like I always do, heard a pop and saw a wisp of smoke. Smelled burnt plastic. I hoped maybe it was a fuse. Checked voltage on the battery, it was 13.27v. Opened up the box and saw that one of the little chips had a dark spot. I don't know what it does, I'm not an electrician :). I bought the box maybe 4 years ago. I know electronics don't last forever, but, is this anyone else has seen?

I'd love to know what that chip does, but it seems the folks from Pegasus don't join the forums that often.

I'm new to the forum but not new to electronics. I don't see any markings on this device/chip but given the arrangement and size of the leads, I suspect this is a voltage regulator. I primary cause of blown voltage regulators in excessive current draw or a short circuit on the output side of the regulator. Without any visible chip markings or a schematic it is hard to tell. I'm quite certain that Pegasus will not provide a schematic as they would consider it as proprietary information.

This is the LM1117 voltage regulator 12V -> 5V for the microcontroller.
It seems that the a high voltage spike during battery plug damaged the regulator.
